Take a structural bracket in ¾" plate, five hundred pieces, bevelled for a full-penetration weld and machined for a bolt pattern.
Relay version. The service center cuts it flat and ships it. A fab shop bevels the edges by hand — inconsistently, because hand grinding is inconsistent. A machine shop drills the pattern, working from the bevelled part rather than the original datum. Three queues, two freight legs, and a stack-up of tolerance nobody owns. Six weeks if everyone behaves.
DEC version. One work order. The plate is cut and bevelled in a single thermal operation, so the bevel is a machine feature rather than a grinder's opinion. It moves to machining referenced off the same datum. It's deburred, cleaned, counted, and kitted. It leaves ready to weld.
